Homework - The extra Burden to kids and root for Stress

There is always a debate for Homework whether it should be abolished or retained. Many of us has different opinion in this regard. Like Ramakrishna Param Hans Said it rightly. Jata mat Tat path.” The more opinion the more ways”  I also quote the proverb “ Practice makes a man Perfect” Mind it its man not a child. The moto of education is to make a child a citizen, a Human Being not Perfect. Thanks to Ministry of HRD who really heard the cry of these innocent minds.

After long-drawn school hours, kids return home and immediately get down to tackling the day’s homework. Where is the time to relax and do other extra-curricular activities?Does homework need to be rethought so that it is less of a burden and engages the child more effectively?
School-related stomachaches, headaches, sleep problems and depression are on the rise. Parents too have a hard time, often doing a major part of the homework to help out the child. Kids are all supposed to be having the physical activity and fresh air. A proper sleep is a must for all the human beings. For many parents sleep is as important as family. Where does all that fit in?
Students can be seen bowed under a load of homework, and an educational system whose focus appeared to be less on education than on getting increasingly stressed-out kids into prestigious universities. People too often mistake children for adults in little bodies. They’re children. To be asking them to go home and after they’ve had their full afternoon of activities and other stuff, to ask them after the meal to write an essay, to do a project, it doesn’t seem too fair.

The Homework generally done by Mothers who are not teachers and the following 4 E’s are creating differentiations,

A)  Education or Eligibility
The teachers are having degree and training like B.Ed or NTT or PTT but this is not seen in Parents

B)  Experience
The teacher is always having experience of many kids and have dealt with various set of Pupils, there is lesser possibility for the parents.
C)  Exposer
The teacher is exposed to the systematic studies and enjoying the environment for the education with the exposer of various workshops and Trainings, this is very likely to be with parents even if the parents are teachers.

D)  Expertise
This part of the segment is making the real difference with Parents. The teacher who is taking subject is always expert in particular subject. The parent may be expert and help in particular subject but cant be master in all subjects. This is the dilleme for the kids to cop up.
Even this is also seen in the summer Holiday Homeworks also where the maximum homework is done by the mothers and Even father at War level at the end of the holidays. Its scene of every home. It seems a ritual done without knowing the reason of it. So Its irony to realize the homework is given to parents or kids. Even the Teachers knowingly give stars also to the best projects after being aware also that the work is done by Parents.

Parents and educators have been struggling with homework for over 100 years, as it has been touted and condemned as a way to improve student performance. Questions the cons of homework are being asked more and more often. In a number of schools, parents are raising their concerns about the burden of homework, piled on nightly, on weekends and even over holiday and summer breaks.

While grades and test scores are important aspects of a student’s academic life, one must not forget to be ‘well-rounded’. This basically means that aside from the academic aspect of a student’s school career, they take the time to join activities and clubs that could help them further pursue interest in a possible future profession. Once again the burdening homework stands in the way. If teachers are so concerned about the success of their students, wouldn’t they want to help them pursue a passion when they got the chance instead of making them read about ancient Harappan Civilization and do a project on it?

I am not suggesting that homework be completely abolished because to a certain point, it is an important part of the curriculum. Having homework teaches students time management skills and to work and learn independently. Homework is essential to make sure that a child revises whatever is taught in school at home too. But the onus is on teachers to try and make it a fun activity for students. Moreover it should be child initiated assignments rather giving filthy Work at home.

Imagine a day with lesser homework. A student would have time to have an actual life. They could come home without that weary look of dread on their face that shows no hope of sleep in the near future. Kids would have the time to be out exercising and helping the community. With lighter homework loads every night, teachers are giving their students chances to pursue what interests them to become the next rock-star or discover something unknown to the world.

I talked to many people who admit that homework is that unnecessary burden on a young child, which impairs his growth forever. A child learns at school for a long time and if his learning process with the addition of homework is extended, it will add a burden that will be difficult to bear. Homework is, therefore, an unnecessary burden. It should be abolished immediately. Learning with homework is, therefore, a continuous torture for the children.
Some feel strongly that the school-going children are ‘little flowers’ yet to blossom in their mental faculties. If they are not given a free and fair environment, they will remain diseased forever. I submit that homework is just an elongation of the learning. This process is too heavy for the children to bear. They have many subjects at school and if the homework is counted in terms of time, it does not free them even in their sleep.

I should like to draw the attention that the children live a very hurried life. They have no time to have leisure for gossips and interaction with other children. If homework is abolished, the will read other useful material. It will increase their appetite to learn more. It shall also increase their inquisitive and rational powers. I submit that in doing homework they are deprived of this social necessity. This is of great importance in making them useful and responsible citizens. I, therefore whole-heartedly support that homework should be abolished at the earliest.

Homework has little educational worth and adds nothing to the time spent in school. Some schools and some countries don’t bother with homework at all, and their results do not seem to suffer from it.
Homework is almost always done when a child is already tired from a long day at school. As a result few students are at their best when they sit down in the evening to yet more work. Homework ends up being done in a hurry, by students fighting fatigue, and poor quality work is produced. Worse still, students who have been up late trying to finish off their homework, then come tired into school the next day, and so are less ready to learn. Really, what is the point?

Setting homework does little to develop good study skills. It is hard to check whether the homework students produce is really their own. Some students have always copied off others or got their parents to help them. But today there is so much material available on the internet that teachers can never be sure. It would be better to have a mixture of activities in the classroom which help students to develop a whole range of skills, including independent learning.

Homework produces large amount of pointless work of little educational value, but marking it ties up much of teachers’ time. This leaves teachers tired and with little time to prepare more effective, inspiring lessons. The heavy workload also puts young graduates off becoming teachers, and so reduces the talent pool from which schools can recruit.

Violence In Schools - Need to Address

Schools can make a difference in how violence is dealt with and in providing safe school environment, are they doing their bit? Is it lack of information about  misconduct - how to address it, hindering efforts to provide safe school campuses.  Hasn’t  sending  off time to the school for children as a routine changed due to recent news bursts lately? From waving good-bye with a confident smile, that you are away from me yet you are safe.  I have been waving off good-bye  every day  ever since my tween son and just turned teenager daughter commenced their preschool with the same confidence. It is children and moms or dads bonding time as we stroll joyfully towards the bus pick up point. We talk about anything and everything laugh and look forward to the day ahead with excitement.
